What Actually Is Love ?

What Actually Is Love? Perhaps let’s first understand what it is not. It’s not desire, comfort, giving to receive, being good, lust, romance or material possessions.

All these things have an attachment or projection on other people or items outside of ourselves to give us something to fulfill something within us. They often start out exciting to either gain or have them in our life but over time, if it is not love then the shine fades and we are left with another object or what might feel like an annoying or unfulfilling person reflecting back to us parts of ourselves we perhaps would rather not see or have to ‘deal with’.

So what actually is love…………. It’s a state of being that comes from within us and is not swayed by what is occurring outside of us. It is reflected by honouring and creating healthy respectful relationships with ourselves, setting boundaries from self-worth and care rather than feeling the need to protect ourselves from fear. Love is connecting with and ‘seeing’ where we can bring compassion or empathy to a situation when we previously may have reacted more harshly or with judgement. Love is unconditional acceptance, kindness, compassion, empathy and connection.

For many ‘love’ is a difficult emotion or state to maintain. In fact, David R. Hawkins from his book ‘Transcending the Levels of Consciousness’ quotes that only 4% of people can actually stay in a state of love ongoing. This is no surprise really, for many of us have experienced various versions of how ‘love’ was or still is expressed to us. And no matter what ‘you’ did, it still felt like you were never truly accepted (and loved) for just being you.

Throughout the generations many of us still struggle with feelings of lack when it comes to love, acceptance and worthiness from within. Until we start to connect within and love ourselves, especially the ‘parts’ of ourselves or times when we felt shame, hopelessness, anger, jealousy or whatever the emotion was, we will stay separate from that inner sanctuary within. Until we can find compassion and kindness for those parts of ourselves, we will continue to look outside of ourselves for validation and love rather than within.

It can take time and needs continuous focus and presence to rekindle and re-build that connection with yourself again, but when you do, you will see yourself and the world from a completely different perspective.

You will be able to surrender to situations and allow the flow of life to guide you, as you will listen to yourself, your heart, your intuition and trust in yourself. You will allow those lower level emotions like fear and judgement to subside and be able to look at the situation or event and see the wisdom it is offering you, the lesson for your growth, rather than getting entangled in it.

I’m not saying that when you are in a state of love, life is all rainbows and butterflies. You still need to live in the world and experiences will come and go, however you’ll be able to witness them from a place of love and compassion and rise up to what is of the highest good for the moment. Life is a journey and we get plenty of opportunity to practice and refine. The people around you will also grow, as you will attract more loving and compassionate people and experiences in your life too.

'Want To Start Connecting To Your Heart More Regularly ?

A great daily practice to bring more love into your world is to keep a GRATITUDE journal, ideally morning and night, write down at least 3 things you are grateful for. This is a lovely way to focus on the positive aspects of life, what you love, what made your heart sing, what joy presented in your day. The more you focus on gratitude, the more you will notice it in your life and the happier and more heart-filled with lovingness you will be. Our brains are wired to detect the danger and threats and focus on that, that’s what kept us and our ancestors alive in the past, but now it is time to raise our awareness. Align with your heart and grow your love for life, because none of us need to remain in survival mode for ever. Writing down what you are grateful for brings them into the physical rather than something that stays spinning inside your head. Now you can see the things that you’re grateful for, and you can review them again and again, reinforcing all that you are grateful for. Really connect in with it and feel it within your body, feel the gratitude build from your heart. If you would like to be supported on the journey of connecting with your heart this month our Fill Your Cup Meditation session is focusing on the Heart Chakra energy – Love. I invite you to join us to connect in with the collective energy of the day - there is always such an empowering connection when we come together. We will connect in with our hearts in meditation and then reflect on what wisdom has shown up to help you heal or bring further insights. We will also embrace this time for sharing (as little or as much as you like) with the group, to support you to be heard and listened to, in a loving and supportive group environment.
